大众起源于新加坡的正兴公司，当时经营故事书和图片。简单的书店迅速、茁壮成长，发展至今日的跨国企业，并于1997年在新加坡股票交易所主板正式挂牌上市。
目前，大众集团总公司设在新加坡，以出版、分销和零售为主要业务，为本地市场提供优良读物。大众也致力举办每年一次的新加坡海外华文书市，将这个书业最重大的活动推向尽善尽美。
2006年，大众继续拓展业务，设立POPULAR Land Pte Ltd，进军房地产。
