earning Through Playing 益智玩具: Though the pandemic has affected our children's learning, the appropriate educational toys can help them to learn while playing. 疫情影响了孩子们的学习,适当的益智玩具能让他们玩出学习力。 By Huang Shu-huei (Taiwan) 文:黃淑慧(台湾) Many parents were concerned that their children’s learning had been affected when they were not able to go to school during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. However, parents of children aged three to six can help make their children’s learning at home interesting by incorporating games into their daily activities or by using the appropriate educational toys. The more they play, the more they learn. The inspiration for these games can come from the little things in daily life. For example, when storing clothes, ask your children to divide them according to the different parts of our body. Likewise, when storing toys, ask them to classify the toys according to their colour or size. When taking your children to the supermarket, you can assign them to find the vegetables or household items on your shopping list. These seemingly inconspicuous activities can train your children's observation and thinking. When my daughter was younger, we often played word solitaire. When I said a noun, she would follow it up with another noun using the last word in mine, like "traffic light" would be followed by "light bulb". This helped my daughter improve her pronunciation and vocabulary. In addition, we would play "treasure hunt" to find the hidden objects in the house according to the clues in the map drawn by my daughter. These simple games would keep us happily occupied the entire afternoon, while letting my daughter learn at the same time. Playtime is important to our children, helping them to learn and develop skills that they will need later in their lives. Hence, parents should choose age- appropriate educational toys for their children and be their children's playmates, enjoying playing and learning together!
