As a new player Publishing House (EPH) was established in August 2020 when POPULAR saw an opportunity to expand into the Malaysian secondary school supplementary educational materials market. Known as EPH2, its core production team was tasked with developing and establishing a publishing programme, which has since led to the publication of 66 new titles in just under two years. Their wide array of publications includes subjects like Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, English, Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Geography, and Accounting. Putting a Strong Team Together The production team of EPH2 consists of editors who are subject specialists, a team of creative designers, and a sales team tasked with promoting EPH’s publications to Malaysian schools, as well as to develop the market further to grow our business. Hence, all the publications by the EPH2 team are tailored to meet the needs of Malaysian secondary school students in a highly competitive market that is strongly influenced by a deeply entrenched 10 - popularnews 140 on examinations and supplementary educational materials. Adding to the challenges, all materials meant for this market must be written in accordance with the KSSM & DSKP syllabus for secondary schools in Malaysia, and be in line with the requirements of the Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) and the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) public examinations. The EPH2 publishing programme complements the publishing programme of EPH1, its sister publishing unit within EPH, which focuses on preschool and primary school publishing, as well as general publishing. Turning Challenges Into Opportunities for Growth Even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the educational publishing scene in Malaysia had already been a challenging market as many homegrown publishing houses competed against one another in the secondary school supplementary educational publishing game in the midst of the pandemic, POPULAR’s robust digital infrastructure played a crucial role in supporting the new publishing unit’s operations, especially when the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) resulted in having no access to office-based resources such as printers. Working from home meant the editorial team had to continue their work with the resources they could muster during the lockdowns. Therefore, having that support from the digital infrastructure made it possible for everyone to carry on with business as usual. An important part of EPH2’s publication strategy was to produce books that would capitalise on the opportunities brought about by the implementation of the new SPM examination format in 2021. Their first series in early 2021 was hence aimed at preparing students for the new SPM examination.
