Last year was no exception, as our staff were presented with mooncakes and fruit baskets. Besides the traditional egg yolk and white lotus paste version, there were also new flavours like the organic mandarin orange mooncakes. Meanwhile, the fruit basket featured specially selected fruit to represent POPULAR’s well wishes for our staff. Grapefruits represent health and reunion. Resembling red lanterns hanging on a tree, persimmons symbolise good luck and abundance. Starfruits represent triumph and look like stars in the sky when cut into festivals. Taking place on the 15 day of the eighth lunar month, the full moon symbolises reunion. Many families head outdoors after dinner to enjoy one another’s company in the moonlit evening. The adults participate in “lantern riddles” as they take in the exquisitely decorated paper lanterns, while their children play with colourful lanterns of all designs.
