Lim Lai Sim, General Manager of UrbanWrite and Roadshow, started her career in POPULAR as an assistant manager at the POPULAR Sungei Wang Plaza outlet in Kuala Lumpur in May 1995 and reported directly to Popular Malaysia’s Executive Director, Ms Lim Lee Ngoh. A well- known shopping mall, Sungei Wang Plaza is located in Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping and tourist attraction district, which includes Malaysia’s most iconic landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Overcoming a Logistical Challenge Lai Sim was promoted to POPULAR Sungei Wang Plaza outlet’s Retail Manager in November 1995 after her outstanding leadership helped her outlet achieve a double-digit growth in sales revenue. In November 1996, Popular Malaysia was looking to expand POPULAR’s retail operations into East Malaysia at the time and Lai Sim was put in charge of preparing the first POPULAR outlet in Sarawak’s Miri. The second largest city in Sarawak, Miri is also the main tourist gateway to various UNESCO World Heritage sites in the area. Lai Sim soon faced a major logistical challenge as all inventory had to be shipped over from West Malaysia by sea freight.
