lack of care because Driss is able to see him as an ordinary man.
This equality goes both ways. Philippe does not discriminate against Driss on the grounds of race, his poor background, or his criminal record. He brings Driss to experience extreme sports, and even helps sell Driss’s haphazardly created painting, helping the caregiver to feel acknowledged and also develop a sense of accomplishment.
A Thought-Provoking Film
This moving film is full of laughs and tears, with numerous thought-provoking scenes. In The Intouchables, I saw not only the relationship between an employer and his caregiver, but also a precious and equal friendship. To people with physical disabilities, it is not pity or even compassion that proves the most important, but respect and a sense of equality.
The title of The Intouchables (“untouchable”) is expressive and profound. Philippe’s greatest desire is for good health, but will never regain any sensation in his limbs. For Driss, who was born in poverty, status and wealth remain perpetually out of reach. Perhaps the most unfathomable of all is the human heart. Philippe and Driss are able to abandon prejudice and open up their hearts to face life with optimism. This sincere message is indeed something to be treasured. With humanity and heart, everything is possible in life.
